About the programOur songwriting summer camp offers a creative space for young songwriters to explore the magic of melody and lyricism. This fun, community-oriented program is focused on providing kids with tools to write and record original poetry and music. Participants will learn the craft of songwriting, music composition, and audio recording. Through collaborations with local and touring musicians, each child will have an opportunity for their songs to come to life. Together they will work towards writing and recording a professional-sounding project worthy for radio. Selected projects will be aired on KGLT. The cost for the camp is $250 for the full week.

Music theoryThe kids will learn to play basic chords and bass lines on keyboards. This will allow them to write their own songs using their own chords. This will allow them to play along to their peers music as well as collaborate with guest musicians.
Our camp will teach three main aspects of music: rhythm, melody, and chords. We will have individual lessons that address each topic. Our instruction will focus on learning music by ear rather than reading/writing notation. These lessons will provide a foundation of skills for students to compose their own original music. |

SongwritingThere will be time set aside each day for the kids to write songs on their own. Songwriting students will use the tools they have learned all week to develop their songs.
Throughout the week we will have a collection of guest musicians work one-on-one with the young songwriters. They will collaborate with the young songwriters to help produce their songs and get them ready to perform, record and broadcast. Any parents or guardians who play music by ear are welcome to join us during this process. Please reach out for more information. The kids will perform their songs at the end of the week for parents and members of the community. Selected performances will be recorded and aired on KGLT. Several guest musicians will perform with the students providing bass, guitar, keyboard and maybe some drums. |
Additional informationWe will begin with a morning meeting, introducing the day and addressing and thoughts or concerns by staff or students. There will be several times during the day for students to have a break, play games and spend time outside. Depending on the weather, we will have lunch outside each day. Parents must provide lunch and snacks for their child. There is food available for purchase in the cafeteria of the SUB building.
On the first day of camp, the kids will make a songwriting journal that they will use throughout the week for all of their notes, and songs. They will also use this notebook to brainstorm and develop their original lyrics and music. Several lessons during the week will be set aside for a music history lesson. We will learn about many of the major influences on today's music. The students will gain insight into many different genres and forms of music. |
